Plattsburgh Fire Department and City Police were dispatched to two separate fires overnight. At 3:24 A.M., units were dispatched to 5080 South Catherine Street for a report of a structure fire to the multiple apartment residence. While crews were fighting that blaze, a second fire was reported at Mickey’s Restaurant on Riley Avenue (4:23A.M.). Units arriving at that location found fire in the office area of the building.
Both buildings sustained heavy fire and smoke damage. Detectives were summoned to
the scenes to determine cause and origin of the fires.
The fire at the 5080 South Catherine Street residence was determined to have started in the basement and spread up the stairwell to the rest of the apartment house. The cause is still under investigation.
The fire at Mickey’s Restaurant was determined to have started in the office area of the restaurant due to electrical issues. It is not believed that these two fires are related.
In a separate unrelated case, we have received requests for information regarding the May 20th fire at lakeside apartments. In that fire, the complex had been evacuated due to flooding and the power was shut off to the complex. At 10:40 P.M. on May 20th, a fire was reported in unit #220. That fire was determined to be caused by the tenant who had trespassed on the posted property and left incense burning on the Buddhist Shrine in his apartment. Russell Yu, 57 years, was found near the scene and arrested for Criminal Trespass 4th Degree and later for Criminal Mischief 4th degree for recklessly causing the fire.
